I have lived in Singapore for nearly half my life now. I fell in love with its peace, its hardworking and agile people. I overlooked its history thinking it was all so smooth — third world to first world, how cool. Gradually, I realized that the old Singapore had left behind many stories — painful yet proud, valiant and tender. Sonny Liew’s The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye introduced me to the old Singapore — full of life and strife — and I fell in love all over again. This is a small country with tough people and some very touching stories. Thank you, Sonny Liew. May your art live forever.
