Chillies!

It is impossible to imagine Indian food without chillies! We add them to many things — curries, fritters, chutneys, wraps, and even snacks and pickles and drinks. Be careful of the Teekha Bhel! A mixture of puffed rice, peanuts, onions and many other things — including chopped green chillies — this teatime snack can cause you to tear up if you aren’t careful. We also use this feisty little fruit to ward off the evil eye by making garlands out of lemons and chillies, and tying themĀ around our homes and places of work and vehicles. It comes loaded with vitamins and contains the capsaicin compound, which is believed to be an enemy of the dreaded cancer cell. You can get these from the market or grow the plant at home as I do. They need good sun and daily watering. Good luck with it!
